Church of Beata Vergine in Torriciella

Chiesina di Torricella della Beata Vergine Assunta

In the ancient nucleus of Torricella, located in the western part of the municipal area, the church of Beata Vergine Assunta is one of the religious buildings to which the population is deeply devoted.

The small village has an ancient history linked to the Origo family, who owned a manor residence here with attached farmhouses and agricultural land. The church, with a single nave and a barrel vault, is preceded by a raised churchyard compared to the road level, and it is accessed via a stone staircase.

The facade is characterised by corner bands in Serizzo stone and is divided into two levels by a string cornice in the same material. The front ends in the upper part by a pediment. The entrance portal is surmounted by a broken pediment, while in the upper level, there is a quadrangular window.

The building, constructed in 1630 at the behest of the Origo family, to replace the small oratory of San Bernardino that had existed in the village of Torricella until then, has an altar against the back wall. The altarpiece depicts the Madonna of Loreto with the Child and four Saints. The artwork is framed within an architectural structure featuring low-relief floral motifs and two angel figures supporting the entablature.

At the crowning of the ensemble, within a mixed frame, the central focus is the Madonna in prayer in heavenly glory, surrounded by angelic figures. Two angels playing trumpets are on either side of her. To the right and left of the altar, in a vertical sequence, there are panels depicting the Misteries of the Rosary. The church also houses various canvases with depictions of Saints, created between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
